KOICA Steps Up Water Supply Project in Congo

KOICA Steps Up to Resolve Water Shortages Issues

TheKoreaInternationalCooperationAgency(KOICA)issteppinguptohelpresolvecontaminationandwatershortageissuesintheDemocraticRepublicofCongo(DRCongo).

Towardthatend,theglobalaidbodyisjoininghandswiththeKoreaEnvironmentCorporation(KECO)andaninternationalorganization,WaterandSanitationforAfrica(WSA),toimprovethecontaminatedenvironmentoftheAfricancountry,KOICAsaid.

Foundedin1988,WSAassists36 Africancountriesbyenhancingenvironmentalconditions.

ThisworkoftheKOICAisthefirstjointassistanceinconjunctionwiththegovernmentofficeandinternationalorganizationfortheAfricannation,accordingtotheagency.

"TheprojectforwaterandsanitationimprovementinIdiofaTerritoire"willsee4 billionwonspenton40 villagesoverthreeyears.Idiofais655 kilometerseastofKinshasa,thecapital.
TheDRCongohasbeensufferingfromcontinuouscivilwarandeconomicrecessionthateventuallyledtoavarietyofenvironmentalproblems.

Congo'sgovernmentwishestoacquireagriculturaltechniquesandwatermanagementstrategies.

KOICAandKECOwillstartconstructionFriday(localtime),afteralaunchceremonyhostedbyCongo'sAgriculturalFarmingMinistry.
LeeHoSung,KoreanambassadortoDRCongosaid,"Lastyear,weinitiatedthisplantocommemoratethe50thanniversaryofthestartofdiplomaticrelationsbetweenthetwonations.Wewillcontinuewiththedevelopmentofdrinkablewater."
