London Heathrow Marriott Saves Water with New Technology
Published on by Water Network Research, Official research team of The Water Network in Technology
London Heathrow Marriott Hotel is the first property in the Marriott UK group to partner with Granuldisk, a market leader in the field of commercial pot washers, to trial a new technology that has so far saved 91.7 per cent of water used at the hotel
Over a six month period the meters showed a daily waste of 6,177 litres of water. The installation of a Granuldisk pot-washing system, which includes an efficient utensil washer, has meant daily savings of 5,664 litres of water, 201.9 kWh of energy and 11.3 litres of chemicals.
Using abrasive PowerGranules, water and a small amount of detergent, the blasting power of Granuldisk technology, combined with high temperatures, means that kitchenware is cleaned in a matter of minutes – using less water, energy and chemicals than traditional pot washing methods.
Ron Vos, general manager at London Heathrow Marriott Hotel, said: “As a large hotel, we’re keen to do what we can in order to reduce as much wastage as we can.
“Once I learnt about the benefits of the Granuldisk equipment and the potential energy and water savings, it made complete sense to have a truly efficient utensil washer installed. We’re pleased to be the first of the Marriott UK hotels to trial the technology and we are sure our guests would be delighted to know we care about our impact on the environment.
“Sustainability initiatives are at the forefront of our ethos and I can see the Granuldisk technology being a future option for other hotels within the Marriott group.”
The London Heathrow Marriott Hotel has taken a number of steps towards reducing its carbon footprint. This includes investing in different equipment and devices to reduce energy and water consumption as well as implementing recycling schemes so that 100 per cent of the hotel waste is recycled.
With its own windmill and a green house to grow herbs and tomatoes on the rooftop, the property has also been recognised by a number of awarding bodies, including the Green Tourism Scheme (Gold Award), the TripAdvisor Green Leaders Award (Platinum Award) and the Green Hotelier Awards (Highly Commended).
