‘Luxury’ loos going down the drain

Leaking taps, broken doors and dirty floors — these are PMC's ‘five star' toilets for the public, constructed at Rs 1.5 lakh each.Talk about starry-eyed promises — after deciding to construct ‘luxurious, five-star' toilets for public use across the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has fallen rather short of expectations.
In 2011, the civic body constructed the first such facility in the Parvati industrial area in 2011, a nineseater toilet block with mosaic tiles and well-lit interiors, costing Rs 1.5 lakh. Seven more came up subsequently in areas like Bhavani Peth, Yerwada, Bibvewadi, Padmavati and so on.
Two years later, these ‘luxurious' units have, rather literally, gone down the drain. Now, there are broken tiles and sinks, leaking taps and drainage pipes.
