Excuse me sirs. Have you ever heard the saying " you can not see the forest because of so many trees." What is happening IS the solution. Major cities are a choice for people of low personal esteem. They feel government is responsible for everything from birth to death. Now with modern technology anyone can live almost anywhere, be off all grids, and be 100% sustainable. India and china are trying to copy western mistakes at an accelerated rate. I can assure you when you stop looking at the trees you WILL see the natural forest.
