MAP OF THE DAY: The World Water Crisis

This marks another year when water gets less attention than oil, and the coming crisis becomes more severe. Through the Middle East and parts of America and Asia, water is a physical scarcity. In Africa and other parts of the southern hemisphere, water is an economic scarcity, which means an adequate supply is not economically feasible. Ban Ki-moon warns: "A shortage of water resources could spell increased conflicts in the future. Population growth will make the problem worse. So will climate change. 1. Thanks Jeff, appreciate your comment. It's a serious situation that is being exacerbated by climate shifts. We all need to be taking an interest in the water issues local and global.

2. I am relieved that people are putting attention on the water problems in our world. I did some traveling recently in Arizona and was shocked at the fragility of the fresh water sources in that region. To my knowledge, the Colorado river is the ONLY major source of fresh water for most of Arizona, the Las Vegas area and a good portion of southern California. Any loss of the snow base from winter fronts and the entire region could be thrown into a major catastrophe.
