UAE-based property developer Emaar Properties has awarded a $10m contract to Metito to develop a treated sewage effluent polishing plant to recycle 20,000m³ of wastewater a day for district cooling use.
The company will also provide operation and maintenance services for five years for the project. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
District cooling systems use wastewater as makeup water for cooling towers to feed DCP1, DCP2 and DCP3 at Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard. The water sewage effluent will be treated by the polishing reverse osmosis technology before being recycled into the makeup water of the district cooling systems.
Metito business development director Bassem Halabi said that the company has been working with Emaar for the past 15 years.
"We work very closely with our partners and clients to develop sustainable solutions that can fulfil their water needs and we are delighted to help Emaar future-proof its iconic developments in Downtown Dubai," added Halabi.
Emaar Properties managing director Ahmad Al Matrooshi said: "We strive to find solutions that can stand the test of time, and using recycled wastewater to meet the water needs for district cooling is a strategic long-term initiative to promote sustainable development."
The project will reduce carbon dioxide output by around 37t a day as opposed to using desalinated seawater for the application.
