Mexican govt to invest US$153mn in irrigation

The Mexican government plans to invest 2bn pesos (US$153mn) in irrigation works this year, according to a release from agriculture ministry Sagarpa.
National water commissionConaguawill work with Sagarpa to increase agricultural productivity as well as ensure a more efficient use of water for irrigation.
Works include the construction of water storage dams, irrigation and drainage infrastructure, well drilling and water distribution systems.
The works will be carried out in at least 13 states, including Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatán.
During commemoration of the 99th anniversary of Mexico's first agricultural law on January 6, President Enrique Peña Nieto pledged to improve irrigation across the country.
Agriculture, territorial and urban development (Sedatu) minister Jorge Ramírez also committed to promote a more sustainable use of water in rural areas.
