Arcadia's Modified Rice Tests Well in Drought, Normal Conditions, a Milestone in Development of Rice that More Efficiently Uses Water
Davis-based Arcadia has a license agreement with Maharashtra, which is doing field studies and growing Arcadia's genetically altered rice, which showed strong yield in both normal conditions and under drought stress.
The rice has yet to go through regulatory approvals, Arcadia spokesmanJeff Bergausaid.
Rice using Arcadia's "water use efficient" traits showed double-digit increases in plant performance and yield.
"At a time when farmers in India face significant pressure to increase productivity, factors such as urban growth, drought and rainfall variations are limiting water resources available for agriculture, particularly for water intensive crops such as rice," Arcadia CEOEric Rey, said in a news release. He said by collaborating with Maharashtra and using other agricultural technology, the company is able to increase yields and improve efficiency.
