Environment Minister Flavia Munaaba Has Revealed that Her Ministry Has Identified 17,000 Land Titles in Wetlands that Will Be Cancelled
Speaking to New Vision on Friday, Munaaba said: "In the verification exercise we have carried out, we identified over 17,000 land titles, which were given out illegally. Structures built in these wetlands will be demolished."
The minister said an inter-ministerial committee has been set up to implement the Government directive to reclaim wetlands that have been encroached on.
She, however, clarified that structures, which were built in the wetlands before the 1995 Constitution, would be spared.
Munaaba said during the retreat the environment ministry had last week in Jinja, the stakeholders observed that failure of the Police to cooperate with the National Environment Management Authority, impunity of powerful people and inadequate resources are some of the factors responsible for their poor performance.
As one of the resolutions from the retreat, Munaaba said they agreed to push for an environment court to prosecute those who breach environment laws.
The stakeholders also resolved to roll out a massive sensitisation campaign to educate citizens on various measures to protect the environment.
On the steps taken to enforce the ban on kaveera below 32 microns, the minister said they have set up a committee to work with Uganda Revenue Authority to stop the importation of the polythene bags.
