The BMC Recently Augmented the Usable Water Storage Capacity of Modak Sagar in Thane District with Lake Tapping Technology
The BMC increased the capacity by 30,000 million litres, which amounts to almost nine days of water supply to the city.
An intake well was dug near the lake to tap the water into it and further up to the purification plant.
The overall cost of the project is Rs 222 crore.
The overflow level of the lake is 163 metres and the usable content today is about 1.29 lakh million litres. The BMC uses water up to 143 metres, the lowest drawable level.
After the augmentation, the BMC can withdraw four metres more of water.
The lake tapping was done by conducting 50 dynamite explosions. Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray pushed the button enabling the lake tapping system.
Technical guidance was provided by Deepak Modak, chief engineer (civil), hydroprojects, who had been part of the Koyna dam project.
