Water is scarce in the arid areas of the world. Due to various reasons it is becoming scarce where it used to be available in abundance. It is therefore necessary for all of us to devise methods to conserve water not only at domestic level but also at commercial level (Agriculture, landscape etc.). Underground water is extensively being used for agricultural purposes throughout the world without any restrictions. It is also used to irrigate golf courses and parks where municipal water supply is not available. This is the main cause of water aquifer depletion. We need to find ways to minimize the water use in these areas. Irrigation water in agriculture can me minimized by using controlled irrigation system instead of flood irrigation method in which lots of water is wasted by evaporation and infiltration. Drip irrigation is another way of using irrigation water most efficiently. Using xeriscaping techniques in the design of golf courses and landscaping is the best way to mitigate water use. At golf courses, grass should be used only at places where it is inevitable. Rest of the areas can be converted to either hardscape or ground cover. Ground cover water requirement is nearly one third of the grass. We should strive to save water for future generations.
