Not only the EU surface water, the same or even the worse situation exists in other countries also. In our areas (Assam, India), wetlands / rivers etc. are being turned out to be the discharge point of all sewages and even the municipal solid waste. Few rivers flowing through some urban areas have already turned out to be a simple sewer line. Considering such situations, these surface water bodies seem to be in a point of no return to facilitate the desired ecological balance. Waiting only for a drastic actions for prevention / mitigation / remediation or whatever is deemed fit.
