Nagare Membrane Gets $10.5 Million Series A

Nagare Membranes Announced That it Has Completed a Series A Funding Round of $10.5 Million Dollars, to Accelerate Development and Manufacturing of its Advanced Carbon Nanotube Membrane for Water Desalination, Reuse, and Purification
"Nagare's goal is to develop solutions to fresh water scarcity and waterborne disease," said Nagare CEO, Rob McGinnis. "The scale of these challenges is enormous, but advances in technology can have a significant impact. For example, we believe that with Nagare's technology, it will be possible to reduce the costs of seawater desalination and wastewater reuse below the point where they will be the lowest cost sustainable sources of new fresh water. As these sources are effectively unlimited, it would represent an unprecedented transformation in global fresh water supply - from an era of scarcity to one of abundance."
By 2030, the planet's supply of fresh water is projected to be 40% less than is needed to meet global demand for food, energy, economic productivity, and sanitation. In some regions, the deficit is expected to exceed 50%. Additionally, the quality of water available for human consumption is often so poor that waterborne disease is the second leading cause of illness and the fifth leading cause of death worldwide.
The desalination technologies Nagare is developing can also be applied to protect people from waterborne disease. "Imagine if every person who might be exposed to contaminated water had an affordable personal filter that would empower them to keep themselves and their families safe—one that removed all known pathogens, and worked for years without needing replacement parts," McGinnis said. "This is something we think we can achieve."
