Nestle Looking for Water Source in Thailand

Water Resource Engineering Company is Contracted by Nestle Waters to Find a Water Source for a Bottling Plant in the Nation
Schrager, a Portsmouth resident, is a hydrogeologist who specializes in groundwater development. He owns GS Environmental and Groundwater Associates Inc.
He's been retained by Water Resource Engineering Company (WRE) in Bangkok, Thailand, which in turn was contracted by Nestle Waters to find a water source for a bottling plant in that nation.
"I'm excited about the prospect of working with WRE and Nestle," Schrager said. "Demand for bottled water is high in Thailand. This is a unique learning and professional opportunity for me."
Schrager will manage the project, which will involve research and exploration.
"The challenges would be the language and the weather," he said.
For documentation research he anticipates he'll need translation help decipher documents that will point him in the direction of potential water sources. For the language barrier, he's hoping technology — an app on his smartphone — will translate his English into Thai and vice versa.
"You want to try to review as much information as is already out there — books, papers, publications — and then use that as a tool with moving forward with your own work," he said. "Before you drill you want to be sure you're drilling in the right locations."
He suspects the aquifers he finds will be developed in rice fields and rice farms in Thailand.
But there are myriad other considerations, according to Schrager, such as: Accessibility to roads and power, whether the aquifer can yield enough water, whether bridges can support heavy equipment, whether the land can be obtained, and whether the water itself meets Nestle's quality standards.
"And Nestle has very, very strict criteria," he said. "You can't just put the well anywhere."
To hear Schrager tell it, he's always had a thing for water, thus his work in hydrology.
