IFRC and Nestlé Renew Partnership to Support Water and Sanitation Programmes

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and Nestlé have renewed their long-standing partnership to increase access to safe water and sanitation in rural communities. Over recent years, the partnership has brought clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to 100,000 people in Cote d'Ivoire's cocoa communities. Nestlé has committed to contributing five million Swiss francs over the next five years to the IFRC.

With this extended support, the water access and hygiene project will expand to neighbouring Ghana. The company's contribution will also continue to support the the IFRC's annual World Disasters Report. Nestlé was the publication's first corporate supporter in 2002.

"Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers are always there on the side of communities to support their response to humanitarian challenges in the continuum of crisis prevention, response and recovery," said Elhadj As Sy, IFRC Secretary General. "Our work on water and sanitation is a key component of the continuum, and we are pleased to partner with Nestlé in that area. Safe access to water and sanitation provides a fertile ground for better health and quality of life."

Nestlé CEO Paul Bulcke said that both organizations had benefited from each other's expertise. "We have moved from a purely philanthropic relationship to one that embodies our Creating Shared Value business model and results in a lasting difference for the communities that surround our operations," he said.
