Why wait 20 years for specialist knowledge when you can get it in 20 hours?
A new training initiative was launched today between youlearnwater and IWA Publishing , to provide specialist training for water managers and supervisors.
Until now, training in the water sector has been centre-based, focused on operators or simply introductory. What’s been missing is specialist training for more senior personnel, the people that make many of the decisions which determine drinking water safety and environmental protection.
In an industry where the consequences of mistakes can be catastrophic if not life-threatening, up to date training and continual professional development (CPD) will help managers and supervisors to plan, foresee and minimise threats to the water supply and environmental quality.
“The philosophy behind all of youlearnwater’s new training programme is to capture the extensive and invaluable knowledge of experienced practitioners” said Dr Colin Hayes, who led the development of the new programme with Helen Clay-Chapman, “but presented in a cost-effective, flexible way through a Cloud-based learning management system. This means access from any devices or operating system at any time and place convenient to each learner.”
Courses are pitched at Masters degree level and are suitable for a graduate in a relevant discipline or someone with five or more years of on-the-job experience.
Each Module for the global water sector includes slide presentations, detailed notes in a Course Handbook, exercises and assessment tests, and are accredited by the CPD Standards Office in London.
Over the coming months, a portfolio of over fifty courses will become available. The very first courses available from 16th November include:
- Minimising lead in drinking water
- Preventing cryptosporidium in drinking water
- Disinfection strategies and process optimisation
and will soon be followed by:
- Understanding and minimising sampling error.
- Management and optimisation of water treatment.
- Drinking water safety planning: catchment principles and practices.
- Operation and optimisation of the distribution system.
- Pragmatic solutions to small water systems.
