New Tech Prevents Water Mains Breaks

The city of Atlanta is installing new technology that officials say will prevent catastrophic water main breaks before they occur
Watershed employees say the sensors are a huge deal because they can prevent massive water main breaks , like the one that burst on Northside Drive in March.
“We are figuring out where leaks are happening before infrastructure is compromised and before roads crumble,” said Govus.
The Department of Watershed Management said a typical water pipe leak wastes nearly 400,000 gallons of water per year.
The sensors are part of a pilot program and they installed them near Hartsfield Jackson International Airport for a reason.
“This main goes to the world's busiest passenger airport and if their water is compromised, business is compromised,” said Govus.
“We have a pressure sensor that is tapped into the water line,” said Sam Krishnan , who is the senior watershed manager.
The Echologics sensors use sound technology and listen for leaks. Once detected, they transmit the leak information through an antenna into the digital cloud .
