New Water Bottle Refill Stations Across Melbourne

The humble H2O is now easier to access for free in Melbourne with more than 60 water fountains now installed across the city through a joint initiative between VicHealth and the City of Melbourne.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said more than 11000 reusable drink bottles have been handed out this month to promote the initiative.

"Water is vital to keep us hydrated, especially during warm weather, which is why we have made it more accessible for everyone in the city," the Lord Mayor said.water-initiative-1200-525.jpg

"There’s no need to spend on bottled water, which is damaging for the environment, when we have 60 water fountains around the city where you can fill up your reusable bottle.

“Melbourne has one of the best water supplies in the world. It’s good for the environment, good for the pocket and good for the body.”

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said the fountains have been installed in shopping precincts with high volumes of pedestrians, as well as areas where people are known to take part in physical activities and recreation.

“We’ve installed more than 60 water fountains to make it easier for people to access free drinking water in the city,” Ms Rechter said.

“You can now access free water at key sites such as Swanston Street, the Bourke Street Mall, and in recreational areas such as the Tan Track.

“By adding refill taps to the water fountains we have also made it easier for people to refill their water bottle when out and about in Melbourne.”

The City of Melbourne website features a map of the drinking fountains, and you can also download a free smartphone app Choose Tap to find the water fountain closest to you.

An evaluation will determine the fountains’ impact in making water a healthier and easier choice for Victorians.
