Imbiber Beads are lightly cross-linked super-absorbent polymers that are engineered to have an affinity for a broad range of organic liquids. Unlike surface-coating adsorbents organic contaminants diffuse into Imbiber Beads, which cause them to "swell" two to three times their original diameter. The swelling characteristic is evidence that the organics are being truly absorbed/imbibed into the solid polymer structure of Imbiber Beads, and not merely coating a surface. Also, as an oil-sensitive SAP Imbiber Beads will absorb many, many times their own volume of organic liquid, which adds to their cost-effectiveness as a pre-filter material complimentary to adsorbents such as activated carbon (for example). The imbibition process means that the liquid is captured and contained within the polymer's structure and no longer available in discrete droplets. The technology is commercially available and does not require re-inventing the wheel.
