Nutrient Recovery & Reuse NR2 Project by Lystek (Case Study)

This case study shows why The City of St. Cloud, MN chose Lystek’s low temperature Thermal Hydrolysis Process (Lystek THP®) to facilitate the recovery of valuable organic matter and nutrients from wastewater biosolids.

This method was used to create LysteGro a high value, Class A quality biofertilizer product for the agricultural market.

About the project:

The City of St. Cloud is the 10th largest city in Minnesota. It is centrally located in the heart of the Midwest along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. The City’s Nutrient, Energy & Water (NEW) Recovery facility is located in southern St. Cloud. The center services a population of about 120,000, including the City of St. Cloud and several area cities such as St. Augusta, St. Joseph, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, and Waite Park.

In July 2017, the City embarked on an ambitious initiative, known as the Nutrient Recovery and Reuse (NR2) Project, to further advance its efforts in resource recovery.

This case study provides details regarding the drivers behind the development and execution of this sector leading project, including the role Lystek was invited to play in this initiative to help move the City forward with a pragmatic, Class A biosolids management solution that addresses key challenges, such as volume reduction, while saving millions.
