National Water Company Signs 25-Year Deal to Supply Aramco with Triple-Treated Water

The National Water Company (NWC) have signed an agreement for the supply of 11,000-20,000 cubic meters of triple treated water a day to Aramco for use in its Riyadh refinery.

NWC will begin supplies of the water, which will be used in various crude oil refining processes, at the end of 2016.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday 4 Muharram 1436 H (28/10/2014) by Eng Abdul Rahman Subaie, Director General, Riyadh Refinery; and Eng Nasser Al Ameri, NWC's Executive Director of oil and gas services for companies, in the presence of Dr. Loay Al Musallam, CEO of NWC; Eng Omar Bazuhair, Executive Director, Refining and Assembling NGL Saudi Aramco, together with senior NWC and Aramco staff.

Dr. Loay Al Musallam commented that the agreement is a part of NWC strategic plan to develop the treated water market in the Kingdom, noting that the NWC has signed several agreements for the supply of approximately 1.733 million cubic meters of treated water, with a value of more than SR4.9 billion.

Eng Omar Bazuhair said that Saudi Aramco is keen to work with Saudi companies to reduce water consumption, to protect the environment and conserve natural resources. This agreement to use triple-treated water will improve performance in industrial processes and lead to integration between Saudi Aramco and NWC in water treatment, both economically and environmentally. Re-using treated water for industrial and agricultural purposes will have a significant impact in reducing the use of groundwater, he added.

Eng Nasser Al Ameri said that the agreement was for at least 25 years, and that treated water is the perfect choice for industrial, commercial and agricultural sectors, being less expensive than desalinated water intended for drinking.
Eng Abdul Rahman Subaie added that the refinery is committed to meet all its operational, cooling and safety needs with recycled water, an approach which maintains groundwater, and contributes to the protection of the environment, and optimizes the use of sewage.
