NWC eyes bottled water business

PRESIDENT of the National Water Commission Albert Gordon has said that the entity has plans to start producing bottled water for the local and export market but has put off a full roll out until it has satisfied the demand for piped water among Jamaicans.
"Selling bottled water is one of the options we are looking at, both plain water and maybe also using localised fruit extracts. We have been in discussions with people from the university, so maybe we could export the flavoured water, we have done the studies, we see the feasibility of doing it but why we haven't moved in a big way is we want to first assure Jamaicans who want water in their pipes that we have you as the top priority," Gordon told the Infrastructure and Physical Development Committee of Parliament last Thursday.
The NWC president was responding to questions from Committee Chairman Pearnel Charles about the entity's water quality and also why, despite providing samples of bottled water for functions, it failed to commercialise the venture.
Gordon said that the NWC has done the legwork but delayed the start because of conscience.
