More than 300 million people in Africa lack access to clean drinking water according to the latest report from the the African Water Association (AAE)
More than 300 million people in Africa lack access to clean drinking water, the African Water Association (AAE) said on Wednesday.AAE made the statement on Wednesday in Douala, Cameroon during the second stage of the Scientific and Technical Council (STC) and the Executive Committee of the Pan-African organization.
The main reason why a great part of Africa have limited access to the precious liquid is related to the difficulty at the level of mobilization rather than from the availability of the resources” François Olivier Gosso, STC Chairman observed.
According to AAE only 4 percent of the 5,400 billion m3 of renewable water in Africa is used by Africans mainly for drinking, cooking, irrigation and energy generating.
In this context, Cameroon’s minister of Water and Energy, Basile Atangana Kouna has urged many governments and companies responsible for supplying populations with drinking water to step up efforts aimed at providing the larger population with clean water.
The most urgent action, according to Kouna, is to improve the indicators of access to drinking water as recommended by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which “recommended the reduction by half the population with no access to drinking water.
