Peru to invest US$180mn in Piura irrigation projects

Peru plans to invest more than 550mn soles (US$180mn) in construction and rehabilitation works on the La Peñita and Poechos reservoirs in the northwestern Piura department, according to a report by state news agency Andina.

The La Peñita reservoir project would increase storage to 80Mm3 in dry periods, providing potable water to regions without access, expanding agriculture areas and enabling the development of additional industries such as fish farming. The project is estimated to cost 300mn soles.

The Poechos reservoir project, which foresees an investment of 250mn soles, would raise the level of the dam and recover its storage capacity.

The Poechos reservoir, located on the Chira river, is one of the main sources of water in the region. However, years of operation have eroded some of its structure, almost halving its useful storage capacity from over 880Mm3 when it first opened in the 1970s. Its rehabilitation would secure water supply for four of the region's provinces and extend the agriculture zone.
