Privitized Water in Abu Dhabi

Over 90 Per Cent of the Electricity and Water in Abu Dhabi Emirate are Generated by Independent Water and Power Plants (IWPP)

Of the nine independent plants operating in the emirate, eight are Water and Power projects and one is power project alone, said Faisal Najed, Chairman of Emirates Sembcorp Water & Power Co.(ESC), owned by Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) and SembCorp. He added that the tenth IWPP is under construction.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the Power-Gen Middle East and WaterWorld Middle East (WWME) annual trade conference in Abu Dhabi.

As Gulf News reported earlier this week, ADWEA and GDF Suez signed a $1.5 billion (Dh5.5 billion) financing package for the emirate's tenth IWPP in Mirfa in the Western Region.

A consortium of 13 local and international financial institutions is funding the project, with nearly $500 million of debt committed by four Abu Dhabi banks. Expected to start commercial operations on a phased basis between 2016 and 2017, the Mirfa IWPP will have a total power capacity of 1,600 megawatts and 52.5 million gallons per day of seawater desalination capacity.

ADWEA and affiliates hold 60 per cent equity in nine IWPPs in the emirate.

Najed said thatAbu Dhabi was the first Government in the Gulf region to have privatised its water and electricity generation sector and developed IWPPs. "It was a success, and therefore, all future projects will be in the private sector," he said.
