Progress of Clean Water Supply in Ethiopia

In Southern Nations Nationalities and peoples state ( SNNPS ), access to clean drinking water has improved to 68% and 92% in rural and urban communities of the region respectively

Some years back, women and children walk up from six to eight hours to collect water from shallow, unprotected ponds which they share with animals in many villages of rural Ethiopia. These sources are subject to contamination as rain water washes waste from surrounding areas into the source. Above all the jugs women use to carry water back to the village weigh up to 20 Kgm. Access to clean drinking water, what the United Nations considers a basic human right, had never been easier for Ethiopian women to access.

“the number of children that die due to lack of safe water back then had been extremely large” said an elderly man whom Awramba Times spoke to in Alaba woreda. “these results are not limited to only new born children, but also their mothers” he added.

Things seem different now in Southern Nations Nationalities and peoples state (SNNPS). According to ato Samuel Tamiru, head of SNNPS Water, Irrigation and Development Bureau, access to clean drinking water has improved to 68% and 92% in rural and urban communities of the region respectively.
