PUB to sign five agreements for research collaboration on water treatment technologies

National water agency PUB said on Friday (May 30) it will sign memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with five international water companies and research centres to explore R&D projects in water treatment.

The agency will sign agreements with Evoqua Water Technologies, Grundfos, Technologiezentrum Wasse (TZW), KWR Watercycle Research Institute and Anaergia during the Singapore International Water Week 2014 from June 1 to 5.

The collaborations include research on water treatment processes such as producing drinking water from seawater and wastewater treatment solutions.

"R&D has been key to Singapore overcoming its water vulnerabilities and achieving a secure water supply, and it will remain vital as we explore ways to keep our water supply sustainable and affordable," said Mr Chew Men Leong, PUB Chief Executive and Executive Director, Environment & Industry Programme Office.

Collaborating with international partners will help PUB to find new ways to contain the rising costs of treating and producing water, he added.

The environment and water industry has been identified as a key growth sector in Singapore, PUB said. There are currently 130 water companies and 28 research centres here, with more than S$314 million channelled into 435 R&D projects.
