Qingdao to build desalination equipment production line

A seawater desalination equipment production line designed by QinngdoHua Xuan Water Company was recently granted 7.8 million yuan ($1.3 million) in government funding. The project is China's first seawater desalination equipment assembly line. Upon completion in 2015, the project will help reduce the country's dependence on exported osmosis membranes, a tool for seawater desalination, according to Science and Technology Daily.
Seawater desalination produces fresh water through seawater desalting. Chen Chuanhao, chief engineer of Hua Xuan, said that reverse osmosis is a widely practiced method of desalination, using pressure to produce drinkable water from seawater.
"Anti-corrosion metal tubes and osmosis membranes are key pieces of the apparatus. The high quality osmosis membranes we developed broke the foreign monopoly and will be widely used in mass production," said Chen.
The seawater desalination equipment production line can produce 750 desalination sets per year. Its products can adapt to water needs in different areas: ships, islands, residential areas, agricultural regions and industrial zones. The size of a piece of equipment for a ship is just as large as a washing machine when installed.
