Royal HaskoningDHV has signed a 2.7 million euro contract to implement two new water treatment plants and distribution networks in the province of Ba Ria Vung Tau, South Vietnam. The project will provide 100,000 people with clean drinking water and boost economic development by increasing water supply to local businesses.

Currently only 30% of the rural population in the project area have access to safe drinking water. The majority of people use unsafe water from wells and surface water which can adversely affect their health.

From intake to tap

The project includes two complete water supply systems consisting of raw water intake, water treatment, distribution networks and 25,000 home and business connections.
Royal HaskoningDHV is responsible for project management and the supply of critical equipment and components.

The contract was signed with the Center for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (CERWASS) of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The project is being co-financed by the Facility for Infrastructure Development (ORIO), which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to encourage public infrastructure enhancement in developing countries.

Living standards

Mr Nguyen Van Tri, Director CERWASS said: "The implementation of the Ba Ria Vung Tau Rural Water Supply project plays a crucial role in our objective to supply clean water to 97% of the rural residents by the year 2020. It is an important and truly meaningful project which will contribute to the realisation of Vietnam's rural clean water supply and sanitation strategy."

Mr Tim Jeanné, Royal HaskoningDHV's Director Water Technology for the AESAN market said: "Royal HaskoningDHV is seeking to achieve a leading position in Vietnam." He added: "Through this project we are really improving the lives of the mainly poor people in the rural districts of Xuyen Moc and Dat Do. Within a couple of years these people will have sufficient and safe drinking water delivered to their houses. We will also be increasing water supply to businesses and SME's thus encouraging economic development.

"We have already delivered the complete design and engineering, socio-economic reporting, EIA and feasibility study for the Ba Ria Vung Tau water supply system. We are now responsible for the construction management of the water treatment plant and distribution system and supply of equipment and components like pumps, valves, sludge scrapers, instrumentations and the electrical and automation system," Mr Jeanné concluded.
