Saltwater Desalination and Recycled Potable Water to Be Major Contributors to San Diego's Locally Generated Water in the Future
Delegation of San Diego elected leaders and water officials returned home Wednesday after lobbying in Washington, D.C. for help with a number of agenda items.Water was at the top of many agendas.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer led the delegation in rallying federal support. It is estimated the 30 largest water agencies in the United States will spend upwards of $230 billion during the next decade on water services and infrastructure.
Closer to home, the delegation was concerned about how to sustain itself while it is at the end of the pipeline in California, which is suffering through one of its worst droughts ever.
"I think the general public understands that we can no longer afford to use water just once," said San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald.
Adding to the push, the Environmental Protection Agency said it may extend a waiver on the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant because the city would be recycling used water into drinking water..
