Showerhead Drastically Cuts Water Consumption

Backed by tech players like Tim Cook, the Nebia showerhead cuts water consumption by 70 percent

In a time when drought is prevalent in the United States, when Californians are being told to cut water use by at least 25 percent, any innovation that saves water also saves money. The Nebia showerhead, which uses 70 percent less water than the industry average, practically rains money.

Movers and shakers in the technology field agree; the Nebia Kickstarter has already been backed by Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook, the Schmidt Family Foundation (founded by Google chairman Eric Schmidt) and others.

While the Nebia resembles some showerheads already on the market, the shower it delivers is like nothing else. Nebia atomizes the stream of water, turning it into a super-fine spray with 10 times the surface area of a normal shower.

Since more of the water reaches the skin, less of it is needed to get clean. Over 500 people have taken test showers using Nebia, and claim “it provides a new and different experience, but much more refreshing and relaxing,” something like a cross between a shower and a steam room.

“Showers have been the same for a hundred years,” said Phillip Winter, CEO and co-founder of Nebia. “It turns out the age-old belief that more water equals a better experience isn’t necessarily true.”

Nebia estimates that if all Californians switched showerheads, it could save 200 billion gallons of water and nearly $4 billion. The Nebia website includes a savings calculator to see how much money and water a customer could conserve.

The showerhead is adjustable to several different heights, and can be installed by the homeowner.

About halfway through their Kickstarter, Nebia has already collected over $2 million in pledges toward a $100,000 goal; most of the reward levels have been snapped up. Nebia anticipates delivery of the showerhead in May 2016, at which time it will retail for $399.
