Plans for Wales' First Commercial Tidal Energy Farm Planned Off the Coast of Anglesey Have Been SuspendedTwo Months After a £10m Government Grant Was Withdrawn
The company had been developing the £50m project through its subsidiary Marine Current Turbines andlast year forecast the array could be producing power by 2015before it was hit by delays.
However, in a statement issued yesterday Siemens revealed it was freezing work on the project and would now look at other opportunities to deploy its SeaGen tidal generators.
The government withdrew a £10m grant that MCT had been awarded through the Marine Energy Array Demonstrator fund in June, after struggles to find match funding pushed the project beyond the 2016 deadline to produce power.
The decision comes afterBloomberg New Energy Finance revised down its predictions for tidal stream system deployment by 11 per centover concerns technical challenges would slow growth in the sector.
However, it also comes after a number of marine energy project developers reported encouraging progress this month withAltantis Resources confirmingwork is to start soon on its MeyGen tidal stream turbine project in Scotland and Tidal Energy Limited unveilingWales' first commercial scale tidal turbine.
