Slurry Pump Impeller vs Expeller:Function,Types,Performance

Slurry Pump Impeller

Function

The impeller  is an essential component of centrifugal pumps and its shape, size and processing technology have a significant impact on the performance of water circulators.

The impeller’s function is to transfer energy from the prime mover to the liquid.

Types

There are three types of slurry pump impeller:

Design

In addition, the structure of the blades can also be divided into cylindrical blades and twisted blades. Generally, closed-type impeller have 2-12 back-curved blades, which have high operating efficiency.

For example, single-suction and double-suction centrifugal pump use this impeller, among them, the single-stage single-suction centrifugal pump impeller has axial force, so some impellers have balance holes at the roots of the blades. Half-open and open impellers have a small number of blades, generally 2 to 5, are mostly used for pumping slurry or granular liquid or sewage, such as the impeller of a sewage pump.

Performance

The impeller’s design and condition have a significant impact on the overall performance of the pump. A damaged or worn impeller can result in reduced flow rate, lower pressure, and inefficient pumping.

Material

The impeller material of the centrifugal slurry pump must have sufficient mechanical strength, and a certain degree of wear resistance and corrosion resistance. According to the requirements of the conveying medium, cast iron, cast steel, stainless steel or, for example, oil pump products, are usually used to convey flammable and explosive oils. Bronze impellers are used.

Slurry Pump Expeller

Function

The slurry pump expeller  is a dynamic component of centrifugal seal slurry pumps that reduces the shaft pressure at the shaft seal area via vanes.

The expeller seal principle is that the total pressure produced by the pump’s outlet vanes and the expeller is greater than the pressure generated by the impeller’s main vanes plus the inlet pressure.

The slurry pump expeller seal is unreliable if the suction head exceeds 10% of the discharge head.

Types & Design

It typically consists of vanes or blades that rotate at a relatively lower speed compared to the impeller. The expeller is usually located close to the seal chamber.

Material

Slurry pump expellers are usually made of metal (cast iron or high chrome), but special materials are also available such as rubber.
