Drought app lets you tattle-tale on water wasters
California's Placer County Water Agency has two new smart phone apps, launched last October. One is a shower timer, which converts time in shower to gallons of water used.
The second, sure to be more discussed, allows people to report water wasters.
Customers can take pictures of water wasters, send it to us. It'll include two GPS locations so we can follow up,"said Ross Branch of the Placer County Water Agency, whose district is theSierra Nevada foothillsthat extends toLake Tahoe.
Creators say the app isn't meant to find offenders, but rather, to encourage water conservation.
"Most of the time, when we have water waste, people don't even know. It's just getting out there and letting them know and then we can fix the problem," Branch said.
PCWA says the app for citizens reporting water waste, in essence, puts more boots on the ground in an effort to spot water waste and to stop it.
"We do receive on average about 35 to 40 calls a week about water waste. About 10% of those do come through the app," Branch said.
