Spain’s water infrastructure budget runs out

EPC contractors building wastewater treatment plants for the Spanish government have been told that payments will be delayed and contracts potentially cancelled because the environment ministry's infrastructure budget is exhausted.

The director-general of water, Liana Ardiles, has warned firms that insufficient funds were approved in the 2013 budget to cover the ministry's infrastructure commitments, an environment ministry spokesman told GWI today.

The government, under intense pressure to comply with EU water quality standards by 2015, boosted the budgets of the ministry's water companies - responsible for tendering priority WWTPs - by 26% in 2013, despite generalised public spending cuts.
