SUEZ Supports Perth in Wastewater Reuse

Water Corporation, the principal supplier of water in Western Australia, has chosen SUEZ and its partner Clough, to build the new Advanced Water Recycling Plant located in the northern suburbs of Perth.

This contract involves construction of a new 14 million m3 per year Advanced Water Recycling Plant to contribute significantly to groundwater’s recharge.

The Perth region has been facing more than a decade of dwindling rain, which has impacted drinking water dams and groundwater supplies. To meet this growing challenge, Water Corporation has invested in climate independent water sources, including a wastewater recycling process known as groundwater replenishment.

Water Corporation already operates an Advanced Water Recycling Plant with the capacity to recharge up to 14 million m3 of water each year. SUEZ and its partner Clough were awarded the contract to build another 14 million m3 per year plant, bringing the capacity of the entire scheme to 28 million m3 of water each year.

The use of advanced water treatment technologies such as ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and Ultra Violet disinfection guarantees a very high level of treatment and the production of high-quality drinking water. This drinking water is then used to recharge the aquifers, which provide about half of Perth’s drinking water supplies.

This project is part of Water Corporation’s long-term plans to provide reliable and quality water sources to the residents of Perth. The construction phase will start in November 2017 for commissioning in 2019.

With this new contract, SUEZ confirms its position as a major player in water management in Australia, providing more than 30% of the continent's drinking water needs. The Group provides water services in major metropolitan areas such as Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. In Perth, SUEZ operates and maintains the water production and wastewater treatment facilities in partnership with Water Corporation and also operates the Perth Seawater Desalination Plant in Kwinana (143,000 m3 /day).
