Gopala, a centralized treatment plant could be the best answer if pre-treatment of the trade effluents is installed. However, in my experience, the sewer system of Hyderabad simply did not function hence the plant did not receive much sewage to treat.

This news of pollution due to Pharma industry in both AP and Telangana states is not new. This is happening for many years and most of the environment awareness public knew this fact. The interesting one is the Common Effluent Treatment Plant model. This model is nothing but cheating public. No common effluent Treatment plant (CETP) in India is efficient enough to handle the effluents generated by the multi product pharma, dye and chemical industries and in the name of CETP , polluting industries are cheating public and the State Pollution Control Boards knew very well that the so called CETPs are only for name sake and they can not serve the multi effluent treatment needs. The only solution is a strict implementation of Zero Liquid Discharge( ZLD) norms for both independent industrial units and CETPs . It is million dollar question whether State PCBs, Central Environmental Ministry could raise to the occasion and implement the strict ZLD norms for highly polluting industries.
NGOs and Public should approach National Green Tribunal seeking strict implementation of ZLD norms for highly polluting industries and CETPs.

I saw this problem in the early 1990s just after the fishery in the lake in Hyderabad was wiped out following discharges from a chemical plant upstream. I raised the issue with the municipality but they were not interested in discussing the problem or in finding a solution.
