Schoeller's ecorepel water-repellent technology in demand

Ecorepel, a mud and water repellent biodegradable technology by Switzerland's leading textile technologies provider, Schoeller Technologies, is a huge success in the textile market and in demand by apparel brands.

Ducks dive underwater and re-emerge with their feathers still dry. Inspired by nature, Schoeller Technologies has used the water repellent effect of duck feathers and transferred it to textile surfaces to make ecorepel, the fluorocarbons (PFC)-free and biodegradable textile finish. The technology is based on paraffins that repel water and mud, similar to the way duck plumage works.

Ecorepel proves to be a powerful choice for durable water repellence (DWR), due to excellent wash- and abrasion-resistance combined with its environmental properties. Renowned apparel brands in the outdoor, sports, and fashion industries - such as Peak Performance, Lundhags, PAC, Bench, or Vingino - use the highly effective water repellent ecorepel technology in their apparel lines, Schoeller said in a press release.

Furthermore, the trend of ecological textile technologies continues to grow, and sustainable business practices contribute to success for companies within the textile industry.

Ornithologist Markus Santhosh Braun from the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg said, "The secret with ducks and many other birds lies in the oil glands and in the micro structure of their feathers. The duck uses its bill to distribute the secretions produced by the oil glands all over the plumage to make it water repellent."
