Sydney Water has been fined $157,500 for water pollution and failing to meet its environment protection conditions after a leak at its Malabar Sewage Treatment Plant in 2013
Following a pipe leak discovered on September 5 2013, treated effluent was discharged into the ocean at Yellow Rock, near Malabar.
Sydney Water pleaded guilty to the offences in the Land and Environment Court on Monday.
The court was told as much as 500,000 litres of treated effluent may have been discharged due to the leak, which could have been flowing for up to five days.
Randwick Council closed Malabar Beach for two days as a precaution to prevent risks to human health following the leak.
EPA director metropolitan Giselle Howard said the impacts of the incident on the water quality at Malabar Beach were localised. The leak was caused by Sydney Water's failure to maintain a pipe and its fitting in a proper condition.
Sydney Water has been ordered to pay $55,000 to Randwick Council to investigate ways to improve sewer leaks to stormwater from private properties and $102,500 to the NSW Environmental Trust.
