Tamil Nadu to use Holland’s Water Management Expertise

The Netherlands has experts in flood and water management. Tamil Nadu can make use of their expertise to help mitigate a situation like the Chennai floods last year, a top Netherlands official said.
Worldwide reputation
“Dutch experts have worldwide reputation in managing floods. One of our specialists went to the U.S. after hurricane Katrina to help them. Water technology, dredging…, we are strong in this,” Mr. Alfonsus Stoelinga, The Netherlands Ambassador to India said.
Speaking at a seminar on “Doing business with Netherlands” organised by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Stoelinga said they were looking at a public private partnership in the dairy and fisheries sectors.
He said 20 per cent of India’s exports to Europe entered only through Netherlands.
Water management
“The Netherlands is below the sea level. The way they manage their water resources is amazing. After the December floods, Tamil Nadu should also look at countries like Holland and in fact, in terms of looking at (building) structures to ensure that water doesn’t create damage, but helps us,” C. V. Sankar, Tamil Nadu Industries Secretary said.
