Two CH2M HILL projects earn prestigious recognition during Paris award ceremony

CH2M HILL projects were recognized with prestigious industry awards during the annualGlobal Water Awardsceremony hosted by theInternational Desalination AssociationandGlobal Water Intelligence. The awards were presented on April 7 at a ceremony in Paris, with a keynote address delivered by Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the president of Liberia and Nobel Laureate. The yearly awards recognize outstanding achievements within the international water industry.

Peru's Taboada Wastewater Treatment Plant was named the Wastewater Project of the Year. The Taboada plant, located in Callao, Peru, is the largest water-treatment facility in South America, with a maximum capacity of 1.8 million m3/d, and is part of the government's effort to improve water services in Lima, the world's second largest desert city after Cairo.

Prior to the facility being constructed, untreated sewerage was pumped into the sea. The treatment plant has helped transform Lima into a more sustainable city by delivering 75% of the city's wastewater back into the water cycle as treated effluent, compared to 16%. The mechanical treatment process employs 22 of the largest screening filters in the world, rough grates, and 1mm fine screening to treat effluent before it is discharged. CH2M HILL carried out the initial design of the treatment plant.

Additionally, CH2M HILL's client, Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), received an Award of Distinction for the Industrial Project of the Year for its $120 million wastewater treatment facility, which treats 24,000 m3/d of secondary wastewater at the BAPCO refinery in Sitra, Bahrain. The four-stage MBR process treats water to industrial reuse standards, meeting very stringent nitrogen and phosphorous discharge limits. The plant includes an innovative double stage cooling of wastewater from 48 to 35°C, and the green and sustainable reuse of the spent caustic as a source of nutrients for the biomass. CH2M HILL led the pilot study, basic and front end engineering design for the process plant and acted as owner's engineer. The firm was recently awarded a five-year contract to provide operations and maintenance for the facility.

"I would like to congratulate all of this year's award winners on behalf of CH2M HILL," said Greg McIntyre, Global Water Market President. "We are pleased to have our clients and their projects honored with such prestigious awards."
