U.S. Government Approves $435 million for International Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

For the first time in three fiscal years, the U.S. Congress has increased international funding for clean water, sanitation and hygiene, bringing U.S. investment to $435 million for these life-saving programs.

President Trump signed the spending bill last Friday funding the government for the remainder of the fiscal year, which included an eight percent increase in funding for international programs that provide clean water, safe toilets and hygiene services to millions of vulnerable people.

Sarina Prabasi, U.S. CEO of WaterAid, said:

"This spending package is a step in the right direction for U.S. development assistance and sends a signal that the United States prioritizes access to water, sanitation, and hygiene. More funding for these programs will unlock opportunities for some of the poorest people in the world: it will keep people healthier, keep girls in school and provide safe spaces for women and girls to tend to their needs and lead dignified lives.  It will also enable communities to be more resilient to floods and droughts."

In an unstable political climate and with funding for development assistance under attack, WaterAid continues to advocate for these vital funds to make sure they go to the communities in greatest need.

Robyn Fischer, WaterAid’s Acting U.S. Director of Policy and Advocacy, added:

"This funding increase will help to strengthen global development and health outcomes, and further developing countries on their path to self-reliance. It is heartening to see continued Congressional support for tackling the global water and sanitation crisis, which has far-reaching implications on our nation’s national security and diplomacy."
