UAE Offers Award for Clean Water Solar Solution

United Arab Emirates Vice President Has Pledged to Award $1 Million to Any Research Institute that Devises a Solar-Powered Way to Solve the Region's Fresh Water Scarcity

During the launch of the UAE Water Aid Foundation, Sheikh Mohammed challenged some of the world's leading research institutes to devise a solar-powered solution to address the Middle East's main resource issue: a safe, steady, and sustainable water supply.

Sheikh Mohammed says, "We are working on searching for durable and radical solutions to the problem of water scarcity using solar energy in the process of purification and desalination of water in needy areas around the world. Therefore, we invite all research institutions around the world to participate in a competition of $1 million to be awarded to people who can find sustainable, cheap, and innovative solutions."

The UAE Water Aid Foundation was established finds ways to produce clean water using solar energy. To date, the Foundation has successfully drilled hundreds of wells in some of the driest, regions in the world and is looking for solar technology to help those efforts.

Since many of the driest regions on earth also happen to be the sunniest, solar energy has been looked at before to help create a solution. For example, suggestions have been made to build large, solar-powered desalination plants off the coast of California, which has areas that experience droughts on a regular basis, and is currently suffering in its worst drought since such records started being kept.
