UV Drinking Water System Installation in Berea

Neptune Benson's ETS Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems Protect the City of Berea, Ohio Drinking Water to Ensure Elimination of Chlorine Tolerant Organisms

ETS announced they have been chosen to supply the ultraviolet treatment systems to disinfect the drinking water for the Dr. Dimiter Ramandanoff Water Treatment Plant in the city of Berea, Ohio.

Berea is a western suburb of Cleveland which serves a population of approximately 20,000 people. The drinking water plant is fed by the east branch of the Rocky River. Water can also be drawn at times from Coe Lake and Baldwin Creek if needed.

In 2010 the Dr. Dimiter Ramandanoff Water Treatment Plant installed a new carbon based filtration system as well as a new back up storage tank. Despite these state of the art improvements, there were still times water from the tap was discolored. An initiative to replace aging cast iron water lines was implemented and the decision to add ultraviolet disinfection to further improve the water quality was made.

The ultraviolet disinfection system will consist of 2 of the ETS SX-425-10 drinking water reactors, each installed after the carbon based filtration system, and capable of treating up to 3.6MGD peak flow for a transmittance of 84%. UV disinfection was chosen because it is the single, most effective treatment against bacteria, viruses and Cryptosporidium. The ETS-UV disinfection was selected because all ETS UV systems are third party validated in accordance with the US EPA Guidance manual, and are manufactured at the ETS production facility in Beaver Dam, WI. In addition, the City carefully examined a variety of disinfection methods, and UV was selected as the most cost advantageous because of its simplicity, reliability and economical operating costs.
