UV Lights to Treat Water

Ottumwa Water and Hydro Will Soon Be Adding New Measures to Ensure the Water in Tap is Safe to Drink

Ottumwa Water will be installing two UV purification lights to aid in disinfection.

Unlike chemical approaches, the UV light inactivates dangerous organisms and renders them unable to reproduce and cause infection.

This UV treatment system will be added to the other barriers already in place for water purification.

Construction has not yet begun on the project.

"It will be $4 million for all the construction cost," said Tim Albert, production manager at Ottumwa Water and Hydro. "Included with it we will have to have two small clear wells that will come in afterwards, some electrical improvements and some valves and piping upgrades as well."

Ottumwa Water and Hydro says that UV water treatment is just starting to gain popularity in the United States after finding success in Europe.

Officials say the project should be completed by the fall of2015.
