VA Tech Wabag Upgrading Desal Plants

The Nemmeli Desalination Plants Will Have a New Technology Incorporated to Deal with Power Fluctuations and Sea Turbidity

After Nemmeli desalination plant was affected by technical glitches, plans are on to incorporate a new technology for the two upcoming desalination plants so that they can acclimatise to local conditions and power fluctuations.

According to Rajiv Mittal, chief executive officer of VA Tech Wabag, which was entrusted with the construction of Nemmeli plant, said the plant was not designed keeping in mind the power fluctuations and turbulence Bay of Bengal.

His comments, on the sidelines of the Tamil Nadu CII Water Summit 2014, came in the wake of the desalination plant's operation being hit due to power fluctuations and sea turbidity.

However, defending the overall performance of the desalination plants, he said they can even perform over and above the installed capacity.

Desalination plants along the Arabian Sea are performing well as there is no issue of rough seas and power fluctuations, Mittal pointed out.

"Currently, we are trying to have this (new technology) incorporated in the planned 150 MLD desalination plant in Nemmeli and 400 MLD desalination plant which is proposed close to Perur," he said.

Interestingly, the 400 MLD desalination plant is awaiting the nod of the Union government after which the Japan International Cooperation Agency will undertake a feasibility study and decide whether to fund the project or not, said JICA representative Itaru Chiba.
