VEI and Plan Nederland Enter Partnership

Vitens Evides International and Plan Nederland entered into a structural partnership in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects in developing countries

Through this partnership, VEI and Plan want to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. The partnership means that VEI and Plan will jointly start up and implement WASH projects in the years up to and including 2020.

Complementary qualities

The parties first joined forces in Malawi in 2013. Here VEI, working together with the local drinking water company, has been mapping how much water is lost through leakages and has been repairing water leakages. Plan works closely with local communities, providing information about the importance of good hygiene and sanitation. "In this project, our qualities proved to complement each other very well. We therefore plan to combine our expertise and hopefully embark on many more sustainable projects," says Plan Nederland director Monique van 't Hek.

Complementary expertise

Plan has long experience in water and sanitation projects, providing training in hygiene in local communities and strengthening the position of women and children. This fits in well with VEI's activities. Marco Schouten, director of VEI: "As WASH parties, we all have our own specialism. That's why we must keep asking ourselves the question: what do we do best as a social venture, and Plan as an NGO? And what might others do better? If you work together on that basis, you can really have a sustainable impact and make a difference."

World Water Day event in Pakhuis de Zwijger

The partnership agreement was signed during theWorld Water Day eventin Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam, whose theme this year was ‘Water and Sustainable Development'. Besides Monique van 't Hek and Marco Schouten, other signatories were Lieve Declercq (Vitens) and Annette Ottolini (Evides Waterbedrijf) as boards of the parent companies of VEI.
