Water Purification Startup Raises Million for Funding

Swajal Water Pvt Ltd, a Gurgaon-based water purification solutions firm, has raised $1.2 million (Rs 7.5 crore) in its Series A round of funding led by Abhishek Gupta
The funds will be used to scale up its operations in India and foray into other emerging markets by next year. It will also be used to engineer and enhance its community-based water purification systems.
"We are looking to position ourselves as the Google equivalent of water purification.", says Dr. VibhaTripathi, the CEO of Swajal. She also added, "With a focus on robust engineering, ease of use, reliability and water quality assurance rather than pushing a 60 year old technology into the market."
Founded in 2011 by Advait Kumar, an engineering graduate from Penn State University, along withDr Vibha Tripathi, Dr Dinesh Agrawal and Dr Rashmi Sanghi from IIT Kanpur and Danny Kennedy, Swajal is operational in New Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh with four regional offices in Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Raipur.
Swajal aims to make water, the most basic of human needs, accessible to everyone by providing clean drinking water in a vending machine model to communities. According to the company website, its water huts and franchisees affect more than 50000 Indians in helping them get pure water. It’s franchisee, Swajal Water Hut system, is a solar powered water purification system vending machine.
