Water table reaching near lowest marks in 5 districts of Rajasthan
Published on by Yogesh Agrawal, Director (retired), Minor irrigation schemes, Water Resources Department at Govt of Rajasthan
In 5 districts of Rajasthan the water table has gone down to 60 metre. The water is available only upto 80 metre depth, as per report published in news paper Rajasthan Patrika.
Report says the water table will reach lowest mark of 80 metre in next 10 years. After that water will not be available even for drinking. This may be the position in other states also.
It is high time that Govt of India and state Govt. bring legislation to control use of ground water in such a manner that water table does not fall further in such areas. To implement effective ban on sowing of high water requirement crops may be the first step in this direction.

Is that report / article / news in Rajasthan Patrica written by some authority in this field who has hydro-geological data? The answer can be sought from Rajasthan Ground Water Board. They must be having aquifer and water level data for decades and latest. It is true that water levels are declining due to withdrawal exceeds to deposit, in many areas. Public awareness / participation with government role is important.

Need use SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) to filter & retain rain water on site to allow the ground water recharge.

It was in 2014 winter, I was unable to believe that Rajasthan can be so beautiful and green in Udaypur and Jodhpur area. Farmers are growing all crops on rain water harvest in nearby fallow lands.

Thanks for appreciating Rajasthan. Apart from crops, Rajasthan is also known for cultural heritage folk songs, folk dances, etc. Variety of crops are grown in Rajasthan particularly crops which does not need much water. But the position is different in areas where dam and canals have been constructed like Kota and Ganga Nagar. In such areas rice, sugarcane, etc are also grown on large scale. I have also attended a conference in I998 for presenting my paper DISADVANTAGES OF EXCESS IRRIGATION in Hindi (avasyakta se adhik sinchai se haniya).

Need to increase managed aquifer recharge and at the same time control the extraction

It is not a handy job to arrange for recharge. It will depend on local conditions case by case. Buy surely, the extraction should be controlled, till recharge mechanism is effective

its best to set up more recharge areas.
