Water, Witches & Wizards: Enviromagic Show Teaching Kids the Importance of Water Protection

Educating the public about water issues takes on a magical glamour when the audience is composed of witches, wizards, and other Harry Potter fans.
In recent shows at a Harry Potter convention and Waterbury Harry Potter Day I tweaked two key routines from " Water Wizard" , my enviromagic show on the water, to better reach this audience. Harry Potter fans are already a welcoming audience for a magician: they love magic and the chance to see it up close and personal.
By framing water issues in a Wizarding World context, the messages of protecting and conserving water resonate more strongly. Already a fable about a man whose legitimate need for water becomes greed and gluttony when he finds a magical source for it, "Thunder" became "Sprites" to better fit the Harry Potter universe. The message remained the same: a ll of us, whether witch, wizard or muggle, must learn to share water.
In "Restored River" , the finale to the show, I kept the same basic message as for "Muggle" audiences: we are making the miracle of restoring rivers happen (demonstrated by restoring a rope they saw cut for each of the water-related problems plaguing rivers) as we keep them clean and learn to take only what we need.
